HASSRA South West Ten Pin Bowling Report
- There seems no stopping the popularity of this sporting event increasing as the attendance record was blown away yet again. An amazing 77 bowlers participated, up from 59 the year before and it was fairly split, 44 Men and 33 Ladies. I never thought, in 2000, when there were just 6 participants, I may have to consider capping the amount of entries next year, as the maximum the bowling alley can cope with under the current format is 84.
- The day began with a short presentation to recognise those bowlers who have, in the past 11 years, joined the exclusive “200 Club” (scored 200 in one game) and the prestigious “600 Club” (averaged 200+ over a 3 games series).

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of HASSRA the following bowlers were presented with 75cl bottles of wine.
- Emma Lyle Bristol 75th entry this year.
- Adrian Heckford Poole 75th entry overall (2005)
- John Goodall CSAC Passed 75 games during event ( 78)
- Tim Topham St Austell Passed 75 games during event ( 78)
- Adrian Heckford Poole Passed 75 games during event ( 83)
- Mike Terry Plymouth Passed 75 games prior to event ( 91)
- Paul Tope Crownhill Passed 75 games prior to event (199)
- Jeff Griffin Bristol Passed 75 games prior to event (204)
- Pete Batten St Austell Passed 75 games prior to event (206)
Once the presentations were over it was down to business.
Open Singles
- The surprising leader after game 3 was Jeff Griffin (Bristol) who averaged 191, followed by last year’s champion Paul Tope (Crownhill) with 177. During games 4 to 6, Jeff’s form dipped to allow Paul to forge ahead and Pete Batten, (St Austell) with the aid of the highest score of the day (227) to come within 11 pins.
- Matt Kerrigan (CSAC) bowled really well to hold 4th place after game 6, especially when you take into account he was recovering from a recently broken thumb (bowling hand) and toe!
- Neither Paul, (142) or Jeff (130) bowled particularly well in game 7 which allowed Pete (185) to threaten the lead fleetingly and make 2nd place almost guaranteed. Paul, to his credit, pulled out a 211 in game 8 to virtually seal victory, bar a disaster, which didn’t happen. Jeff did claw back 19 pins in game 8, but it still left him 25 more to overhaul Pete to attain 2nd place and entry into the National Event.
- As hard as Jeff was trying to exert some pressure on Pete he just wouldn’t buckle and Pete stayed as composed as ever. It came down to the last frame, with Jeff needing to bowl 3 strikes to win by one pin. “Strike!” First hurdle cleanly taken, “Strike 2!!” What’s happening here? Before anybody could decide what happens in a tie? “Strike3!!!” In only the 2nd time in 11 years Pete found himself in 3rd place and not going to the Nationals for the 1st time in 8 years.
- Matt Brooks (Plymouth) must be congratulated for finishing 4th with a creditable 154 average, thanks to a final game of 201. Matt becomes the 17th member of the exclusive “200 Club,” well done!
- You may notice, it is now called the “Open Singles” rather than the “Men’s Singles” and that is because of Maggie Gaughan of Gloucester. Maggie has shown ladies are quite capable of competing against Men at bowling and this year was no different by finishing 6th, only 13 pins behind 4th place.
Ladies Singles
- A more sedate competition was played out in the Ladies section as a record 33 bowlers competed for top spot. In reality it was more like Maggie was always going to win bar injury and the rest to battle it out for 2nd and 3rd. There were no injuries and Maggie duly won the competition by 160 pins and picking up on the way the Ladies high game of 164. (Maggie did bowl a 191 later but that was in the Open Competition).
- The fight for 2nd and 3rd was far tighter as no fewer than 8 bowlers were in contention going into the final game. Lucy Davis (Bristol) was as surprised as anybody to find she had captured 2nd place from Hayley Williams (Taunton) by the narrow margin of 9 pins. Tracy Black (CSAC) tried really hard in the final game (158) but could not recover sufficiently from an uncharacteristic 87 in game 5 to overhaul the other 2 and finished 4th.
Team Event
- A much larger team from Crownhill CSA entered this year, but it was the same 3 bowlers who ensured they retained the Team Trophy. Paul Tope, the Open Singles Winner, was ably supported by Tim Varcoe and Stuart Southam and between them they knocked over 2660 pins.
- The huge team (30) from CSAC Plymouth were a close 2nd (2630) thanks to Matt Kerrigan, Andrew Trott and Bob Coates.
- Not far behind in 3rd, (2602) came the trio of bowlers from St Austell, Pete Batten, Tim Topham and Mark Godwin.
Attached are the full results for 2010 and everybody’s current standings.

HASSRA to Celebrate 75 Years
Dear All,
HASSRA South East are planning to have photos on display at our 2010 Special event: Viva Las Vegas
These are to celebrate 75 years of ‘HASSRA’ (and its previous incarnations).
With this in mind we would like every region to delve into their supplies of photos and newspaper clips from the past! Ideally, we would like something showing:
- Particular moments of triumph (A national win possibly)
- At least one photo showing a regional team in the regional colours (whatever they were at the time!)
- Funny moments
- Fondly remembered faces from the past.
- Special Event memories
- Sports day memories
- Something recent
- An assortment of events
- Anything you think fellow HASSRA members would be interested in!
When you find items you think will be appropriate please label the back of photos and enclose newspaper clippings in plastic wallet with label.
The label should include:
- The name of the person and region they came from so we can get them back to you.
- Date of item (if known).
- Enclose any details you think would be interesting and send items to:
