Do you have what it takes to compete in HASSRA’s own version of X-Factor?
- Do you watch X-Factor and dream of treading the boards and being in the spotlight? Are you hiding a secret talent for acting and are hoping it will be recognised? If so the award-winning HASSRA Yorkshire and the Humber Regional Drama Group wants to hear from you.
- The Regional Drama Group was first established to compete in the national HASSRA Drama Festival 2007. Each year drama groups from across the HASSRA regions get together to compete in the festival and awards include Best Play, Best Actor and Best Actress, with follow-up national publicity across DWP.
- After only two years of entering the competition the group is already doing very well in the festival. In 2007 the group won the awards for Best Actor and Best Actress (runner-up) and in 2008 the group was joint runner up in the Best Play award.
- Group chairman, Tony Musgrave, said: ‘The first Festival we entered in 2007 was so much fun that we decided to create a permanent Drama Society in the Yorkshire and the Humber Region. The aim of the Society is to encourage participation in the theatre, not only by entering the annual HASSRA Drama Festival, but, eventually, by entering independent festivals and, hopefully, putting on our own productions to a paying audience!’
- The group is now preparing to enter the 2009 drama festival which will be hosted by HASSRA South West and held at The Barbican Theatre, Plymouth next April. They will perform an original play, The Inheritance, written by their chairman, Tony.
- Members are also hoping to perform in a variety concert to raise money for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance in Summer or Autumn 2009.
- As well as performing, the group has an active social side and there are regular nights out and get-togethers. As well as actors, the group is also trying to attract people who may be more comfortable helping out with a variety of vital backstage roles. Membership of the Drama Group currently costs £10 per year.
- If you are interested in acting or in backstage production and would like to get involved with the Drama Group after the 2009 Festival, please contact Tony Musgrave on 01482 756508. Alternatively if you work in the Leeds estate please contact Isobel Todd on 0113 232 7491
