South East Bowls
Following on from a successful Pairs competition in June, White Rock Bowling Club in Hastings again played host to our regions Singles tournament. A bright day with afternoon sunshine was welcomed by the nine players. The greens played very well (with a good pace to them) despite this summers heavy rains.
The nine players were drawn into three groups. The winners of each group (together with the best performing second place player) would progress to the knock out Semi Finals.
Group A consisted of two of the favourites (Lee V and Russ C) and perennial competitor Ray Allen. Lee and Russ drew the opening match 12-12 and then both beat Ray. Lee topping the group by virtue of a much more decisive victory against Ray.
Paul Wyatt and Lindsey R were in Group B with the unknown quantity of first time bowler to Hassra events - Mick A. Mick claimed 9 and 11 shot victories to top the group with Paul in second place by virtue of his thrashing of the luckless Lindsey.
Dave H was drawn in Group C with the six time previous champion Chris R and home player Keith Waters. Despite going 1-9 down in the opening game to Keith, Chris then recovered to win 14-12 and win the group. Both Chris and Keith defeated Dave therefore Keith was placed second.
In the semi finals both games were won easily. Lee defeating Mick 16-4 and Chris beating 'best group runner up' Russ 15-7.
The final was an absolute classic with wonderful bowling from the off. Lee led from the start and was only behind once in the match. With the scores 14-14 there had to be a winner on the next end in this 15 up final and it was Lee with a perfect bowl to get inside Chris’s nearest (just 12 inches from the jack) to claim the title for the second time.
Our group would be happy to hear from anyone interested in taking part next year - please make contact with Chris Rolph (firstname.lastname@example.org).
After last years ‘Covid break’ the bright sunny weather that was promised a few days earlier did not appear for the resumption of the HASSRA Southeast Bowls Pairs competition. Dull, overcast conditions prevailed until late in the day. Thankfully the rain and wind stayed away and a good days sport was had at the White Rock Bowling Club in Hastings.
Ten HASSRA members (5 pairs) entered and played a round robin, therefore each team played four games during the day. Russell (winner the last three times the event was played) was missing his regular partner Chris (broken shoulder). Occasional bowler Ray deputised and performed well but was not able to help Russell to another victory. The pair won their first two games of the day +12 and +3 before succumbing to Chris and Keith -1, and the ‘Bruvvers’ (Gary and Lee) -5. Four times previous winner Chris joined up with home club star Keith, and the pair reigned supreme, winning all their games on the day! The key victory was just after lunch when defeating the Bruvvers’ +4. The group welcomed a ‘newby’ to the event (Andy) who, playing with the versatile sporting legend Lindsey, went through the day without winning a game! The pairs best performance was against Andy’s father , Dave, who was paired with Paul Wyatt.
The singles event resumes (Covid allowing) on 8th July and the group would welcome interest from anyone wishing to try their hand at the game. Please make contact with Chris Rolph (email@example.com).
