The Summer Competition

THE SUMMER SHIELD
The first Angling competition in the Region was held in the Summer of 1973. It was the only competition in the angling year and was used to decide who would represent the
Region at the National Angling Competition. Initially it was known as the Regional Championship and continued as such until 1983/84 when the Championship became
fished for over three legs, Summer, Autumn – The Claude Evans and Winter. A new Trophy was donated by Phil Lippiatt and became known as the Summer Shield. The Shield is
awarded to the angler with the heaviest total weight on the day.

In 2022 the Competition was renamed THE HAROLD WESTON SUMMER SHIELD following the passing of our dear friend and colleague. Harold fished with us from the start and was Regional Champion in 1974, in his latter years he became our unofficial President and greatest supporter.

THE MARGARET WESTON BEST FISH OF THE DAY SHIELD
Margaret was our Regional HASSRA secretary, she was persuaded to come fishing with us in the late 70’s and became a regular often the winner of the unofficial Ladies competition. Sadly, she passed far too early and, in her memory, Harold donated the trophy for best fish of the day. This has been fished for since 1991. We were recognising a best fish of the day previously and below is also a list of those winners from 1979 to 1990.

THE HERON SHIELD
The Heron Shield was donated by the Hasting ILO staff back in 1976, recognising the numbers from that office that were attending the competitions in those days. Originally,
the Shield was fished for by teams of three from an individual office Later, as numbers dwindled, it was a team from any district and latterly a team of any two HASSRA
anglers.
